A different “Santo António” – part I

Today I went out to the streets of Lisbon for the first time in 3 months. To say it felt strange is an understatement, especially because normally this time of the year Lisbon is bursting with people on the streets celebrating the “Santo António” festivities. This year, all gatherings are banned due to Covid-19 so there is an eerie quietness on the streets, and definitely a lot of sadness in people’s faces.

  1. I don’t know about Portugal but I have family in Italy and have been out during religious festivals. It always seems a cathartic experience for the town. It must be really hurting a lot of people to not have it this year.
